The Iraqi parliament Wednesday lashed out at the United States for threatening to attack the country and vowed to fight against any invasion, saying US war threats are "doomed to fail", the state Iraq TV reported.
"We are not afraid of their threats and they are doomed to fail," National Assembly Speaker Saadoun Hamadi said during an extraordinary session of the parliament.
"Because our people are united, our faith is high, our means aremobilized and active and our spiritual and material abilities are great," he said.
"Our people have fought the aggressors and overcome them always," the Iraq TV quoted Hamadi as saying.
Wednesday's session was the second emergency meeting of the parliament in one month and at a time when the prospect of a US-ledwar on the country is on the horizon.
US President George W. Bush has accused Iraq of pursuing weaponsof mass destruction and supporting terrorism and repeatedly vowed to achieve a "regime change" in Iraq.
Hamadi said the US allegations are "false" and aimed to mislead the international opinion to accept its threats against Iraq and its President Saddam Hussein.
"Those who do not really know what is here in Iraq have said that according to their own political motives," Hamadi said.
"We hope that those who are making these false allegations wouldtake the opportunity to know the truth," he said, renewing his invitation to the US Congress to send a fact-finding team to Baghdad.
Hamadi on Monday sent a letter to the US Congress, inviting it to send a delegation to Baghdad to prove US allegation that Iraq ispursuing weapons of mass destruction.
But the White House dismissed Iraq's invitation, saying what is needed is for Baghdad "to live up to its commitment to disarm," notdiscussion.
