Support for Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian has slumped after his incendiary remarks backing a referendum on Taiwan's future and destiny, Reuters quoted local polls as saying on Tuesday.
A survey by cable network ETTV showed Chen's approval rate sinking to a record low 46 percent after he said in a speech to an overseas Taiwanese association in Tokyo on Saturday that there was "one country on each side" of the Taiwan Straits. That compared to over 80 percent approval when he took power in 2000 and 60 percent on his second anniversary in May, it said.
A separate poll by the mass-circulation China Times showed that a majority of respondents said his remarks would hurt Taiwan's economy and domestic stability.
Chen's remarks have drawn criticism from both sides of the Straits.
