Taiwan Leader's Splittist Remarks Condemned in Chile

The Association for Promoting Peaceful Reunification of China in Chile on Monday condemned Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's recent splittist remarks.

The Association for Promoting Peaceful Reunification of China in Chile on Monday condemned Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's recent splittist remarks.

Chen called for a referendum on Taiwan's future and destiny on an appropriate occasion and preached that "each side is a country"and that Taiwan would "walk down its own road," in a speech with an overseas Taiwanese association in Tokyo on Saturday.

Zhang Weilian, chairman of the association, said Chen's remarksrevealed his true colors as a splittist. Chen is "dragging the 23 million Taiwan compatriots into disaster," he told Xinhua.

"It is well-known that there is only one China in the world andthat Taiwan is an inalienable part of it. People from both sides of the straits have common ancestry and share the same culture. Hewho wants to separate Taiwan from China will surely be labeled as a historical sinner."

He said Chinese living in Chile, like all other overseas Chinese, firmly condemn Chen and a handful of separatists in Taiwan.

Deputy chairman Peng Fendou said Chen's remarks are provocationto the "one China" principle and violation of human rights of the Chinese people as a whole.

He asked overseas Chinese to unite and work for the reunification of China.
