The Indonesian and Malaysian airforces started Tuesday the six-day joint exercises at the Supadio airport in the city of Pontianak in Kalimantan island, where both countries share land borders.
"There is no particular issue on the borders now. The two-yearly exercises are conducted to maintain readiness in both countries, especially when we need joint operations," said Maj. Gen. Datuk Azizam Ariffin, operating commander of the Malaysian Air Force (TUDM).
"The exercises are aimed at improving capacity in securing Indonesia-Malaysia airspace," Vice Marshall Wartoyo of Indonesia added.
Indonesia deployed 141 personnel, five Hawk-109/209s, one CN-235 and one Puma helicopter. Malaysia sent 146 personnel, five Hawk-108/108s, one CN-235 and one SK-61 helicopter.
Director of the exercises program Colonel Imam Sufaat of Indonesia said the exercises will train personnel to sharpen accuracy and speed in operating war devices, to process intelligence data and to plan and arrange air strikes.
Indonesia and Malaysia have been facing problems in the border areas, including smuggling and illegal migrants.
