Representatives from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United Nation Command (UNC) Tuesday discussed measures to prevent future inter-Korean naval clashes during a General Officer meeting at the truce village Panmunjom, according to a news release of UNC.

The two delegations were respectively led by UNC Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. James Soligan and the DPRK army's representative at the truce village, Lt. Gen. Ri Chan-bok.

The two sides discussed several preventive measures such as establishing new communication procedures and conducting regular staff officer level meetings to reduce tensions and prevent any inter-Korean military conflict from happening, said the release.

The talks were designed to reduce tensions between South Korea and the DPRK, which had ever increased due to the June 29 inter-Korean naval clash in the Yellow Sea, added the release.

Meanwhile, Gen. Soligan also used the chance to inform the DPRK about the UNC's on-going investigation of the naval clash and the information of the South Korean salvage operation for the sunken boat in the clash.

Gen. Soligan said in the release that they had a very positive meeting, "a tone of cooperation and common interest in reducing tensions and preventing miscalculations."

It is the first time that the General Officer level meeting was held between the UNC and the DPRK since November 2000.
