Heads of Chinese, Cyprus News Agencies Meet

Tian Congming, president of China's Xinhua News Agency, met Tuesday with Charilaos Papadopoulos, chairman of the board of directors of the Cyprus News Agency.

Tian Congming, president of China's Xinhua News Agency, met Tuesday with Charilaos Papadopoulos, chairman of the board of directors of the Cyprus News Agency.

During the meeting, the two exchanged views on furthering cooperation and promoting mutually beneficial news services.

Tian said Xinhua will strengthen exchanges and cooperation withnews agencies and the media from other countries, to learn from them and to make further advances in news reporting.

Tian said he hoped cooperation between the two agencies would strengthen, in order to help Chinese and Cypriots understand each other through objective and fair news reportage.

Papadopoulos said the friendly relations between the two agencies was a symbol of the friendship between Cyprus and China, and the exchanges between the two sides enhanced mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples.

He said Xinhua is a large news agency. The visit to Xinhua not only left a deep impression on him, but also gave him more practical ideas on how to cooperate with his Chinese counterparts.

He also expressed the hope that the two agencies would continueto play an important role in the economic construction and social development of their countries respectively.

Petros Kestoras, Cyprus ambassador to China, attended the meeting.

A cooperative agreement was signed by the two news agencies in February, 1997.
