The Guangdong Provincial Government on Monday purchased 4,000 sets of locally-made WPS Office 2002 office software in the largest deal of its kind in this booming south China province.

At a ceremony in the provincial capital of Guangzhou, Xu Zhibiao, director of the Guangdong Provincial Information IndustryDepartment, received a certificate of authorized usage from Qiu Bojun, chairman of the Kingsoft Software Company, developer of theWPS system.

The software would be used in more than 40 departments and bureaus of the Guangdong Provincial Government, said Xu.

With the selection of the Kingsoft office software, the provincial government was supporting the development of China's indigenous software industry, as well as giving the public the message, "Respect intellectual property rights and reject piracy",Xu added.

The WPS system was the only product which experts say could challenge the overwhelming dominance of the Chinese market by Microsoft Office. The Guangdong Provincial Government was the second in the country to endorse WPS as its standard office software after the Beijing Municipal Government.
