The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Monday rejected US claim that the Islamic republic has links with the Taliban and the al-Qaeda group, the official IRNA news agency reported.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told reporters that Iran has repeatedly announced its opposition to the al-Qaeda duringthe past few years, adding Iran has been among a few countries to announce their opposition to Taliban by words and deeds.
US special envoy on Afghanistan and President George W. Bush's special assistant for Near Eastern Affairs, Zalmay Khalilzad on Friday accused Iran of harboring members of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network after they fled the US bombardment in Afghanistan.
"The accusation of presence of several al-Qaeda members in Iran is not at all in conformity with the past and present realities in the country and is not accepted by any impartial person," Asefi said.
"Washington has been turned into a bully in the world and is attempting to achieve its illegitimate objectives by violating international norms and regulations," he said.
