China, Venezuela out of World League Volleyball

China scored a win but lost a match in two clashes against Venezuela in the sixth and last intercontinental round of the men's volleyball World League at last weekend.

China scored a win but lost a match in two clashes against Venezuela in the sixth and last intercontinental round of the men's volleyball World League at last weekend.

China, which won twice over Venezuela in the previous round, won over Venezuela 3-2 for third win in a row in the Barquisimeto Dome, Venezuela last Friday.

Venezuela had a good start and an initial 8-5 lead, which they held for most of the set. But powerful attacks by Chinese Shi Hairong and several service errors by Venezuelans helped China win the first set 29-27.

In the second and third sets, Venezuela fielded some substitutes to enforce the attack. The move paid off as the team won the two sets 25-19, 25-20.

The Chinese mounted a Great Wall defense by improving blocking to take the two following two sets and the match.

The Venezuelan team achieved finally its first victory in this League after beating China 3-1 in the Cabimas, Venezuela in their second clash on last Sunday.

Venezuela their determination from the first set that they did not want to leave winless and won the first two sets with ease, 25-20, 25-18.

China did not want to give up and won the third set 26-28. In the fourth and last set, the Venezuelans were better on blocking and attacking, which finally brought them to their first win in the tournament as hosts.

China and Venezuela both exit the tournament after this round after Pool B leaders Italy and Spain advanced.

After the round, eight teams, including Brazil, Poland, Italy, Spain, Russia, the Netherlands, France and Yugoslavia, advanced into the final round of the World League which will be held at Brazilian cities of Recife and Belo Horizonte August 13-18.

The groupings for the venues will be announced on Monday.
