Rescue Efforts Proceed, 19 Miners Still Missing in Coal Mine Fire

The 19 miners trapped in a fire that broke out at a coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province on Sunday were still missing at press time.

The 19 miners trapped in a fire that broke out at a coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province on Sunday were still missing at press time.

The fire, which occurred at the Chiyu Coal Mine in Huozhou city,was triggered by an electric cable igniting in the main shaft, according to local sources.

Rescue teams are searching for the missing miners in every two-hour shift and Shanxi Governor Liu Zhenhua is on his way to the accident site.

The identities of the 19 trapped miners have been confirmed. Police are searching for the runaway manager of the coal mine, which has been managed by the Huozhou Coal and Power Company Groupsince November 1997.

Officials from the Shanxi provincial government and the Huozhou city government are coordinating rescue efforts at the site.
