A fire that broke out in an outdoor Moscow market under a bridge caused part of a new ring road designed to alleviate traffic in the center of the Russian capital to collapse Friday, paralyzing traffic in parts of the city.
Repairs on the so-called "third ring road" will take several weeks to complete, Russian emergency and city officials said. Russian television showed pictures of the road, which collapsed in two places forming huge molten craters that oozed with gooey black tar.
The fire broke out in a part of the Luzhniki outdoor market, one section of which is located under the road. Firefighters managed to put out the fire but not after it had melted away some of the metal supports on the edge of the road.
The new ring road was opened last year amid much fanfare with great hopes that it would relieve the miserable traffic jams that plague Moscow.
In the past ten years, hundreds of thousands of people who never had cars purchased them and officials have been unable to manage the huge increase in the number of vehicles on city streets.
