China's top union leader Wei Jianxing on Sunday called on trade unions nationwide to give top priority to caring for and respecting model workers.

Wei, president of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) and also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC)'s Central Committee, made this call while visiting 100 national model workers on an organized vacation at Beidaihe, a famous beach resort in north China.

"To care about and respect the model workers is a major task for trade unions in their efforts to perform their basic duty of safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of the workers," said Wei.

Each year since 1949 the Chinese government has selected hundreds of ordinary workers across the country, granting them thetitle of "model workers" in honor of their hard work and outstanding performances.

Commending the model workers for their "indelible contributions" to China's reforms, development and stability, Wei asked all trade unions to take good care of them, especially "those facing various kinds of difficulties".

Better working and living conditions should be created for the model workers to bring their model role into full play, he added.

He also expressed the hope that the model workers would keep learning and improving their understanding of President Jiang Zemin's "Three Represents" theory for Party building, and would continue to lead other workers in broadening reforms, promoting development and safeguarding stability.
