Chinese Aim at 15 Athletics Golds at Asian Games

China has set a target of 15 gold medals in the sport of athletics at this year's Asian Games, a senior Chinese sports official said on Friday.

China has set a target of 15 gold medals in the sport of athletics at this year's Asian Games, a senior Chinese sports official said on Friday.

"We hope to retain China's leading status in Asian athletics," said Wang Dawei, deputy director of Chinese Athletics Sports Management Center.

Chinese have faced in recent years an increasingly tough challenge from other countries in the region for the sport, with their Asian Games gold medal tally declined from 22 in 1994 to 15 in 1998.

"Only eight golds could be assured," Wang admitted. "It's hardto win more."

Wang made the comments during his inspection of a training campin southwestern Chinese province of Guizhou, where some Chinese athletes had just completed a one-month training course.

He listed arch rivals Japan as the biggest threat for their campaign. "Judging from their performance this year, they would be a dangerous force for us, especially in the men's events," he said.

Wang also warned that South Korea will make good use of the advantage as hosts to hinder China's title drive. "South Koreans are also strong in some of the events where we had expected to win," he said.

Chinese athletes will kick off a series of warm-up competitionsfor the Asiad, which will be held from September 29 to October 14 in Pusan.
