According to the news of Aug.1, 2002 from Qinhuangdao, The construction projects for fast growing and rich production woods in the key areas of the country have been officially launched, said Zhu Like, Deputy director of the State Forestry Bureau. And so the six national forestation projects much concerned for by people at home and abroad have up to now been all set in motion.

To quicken the steps for a lofty objective of a beautiful landscape in China the beginning of 2001 saw the plan for the six key forestation projects in China approved by the State Council and was put into the "Tenth Five Year Plan" for operation.

The six key projects include: protection of the natural forest resources; project for returning farmland to forest; construction projects for the key forest protection system in "northeast, north and northwest China" and along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River; projects for taming the source area of sandstorm in Beijing and Tianjin; projects for protection of wild lives and plants and construction of nature reserves and lastly, the construction projects of a key base for fast growing and rich production woods for timbers. Now we see the previous five of the six projects all set in motion and are now in the course of construction.

The formal implementation of the last project, the base construction for fast growing and rich production woods for timbers as set off now covers 886 counties (cities and districts) in the following 18 provinces and autonomous regions in Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shandong, Henan, Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and Yunnan.

The general objective of the project construction is to form a key base of 200 million mu of land for the cultivation of fast growing and rich production woods for timbers in the year of 2015 by way of forming new forests and transformation of the old ones.

That will be able to meet some 40 percent of timber-needs in the country, which plus the reasonable felling of the existing timber-resources, will balance the supply and needs for timbers as required by the country.

The carrying out of the project indicates the speeding-up of the historical paces in which the felling of forest will be shifted from the natural ones in the past to that of the manmade in the days to come.

The kicking-off and implementation of the construction project for a base of fast growing and rich production woods for timbers will help solve fundamentally the problem of wood supply and need in which an integrated management is used without causing water and soil erosion for realizing within a shorter period of operation by using less forestland to produce more timber-woods.

This will again provide a guarantee to the implementation for other key forestation projects for ecological purposes and in the meantime it can help take up a great number of surplus workforces in the countryside for the adjustment of industrial structure and for promoting the economic development in rural areas.
