It's Hard for Maglev to Run on Bj-Sh High-Speed Railway: Expert
Construction of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway has been decided and has gone through feasibility studies, with the plan submitted to the State Council, railway official said on Wednesday, adding that it is not up to them to decide whether to adopt the rail-and-wheel technology or the maglev (magnetic levitation) technology. But experts say it is not so possible to use maglev for the railway line.
There is sharp contradiction between traffic supply and demand due to the populated areas where trains run through, so after a series of on-the-spot studies, the Ministry of Railway decided to build a high-speed passenger line linking the two cities and realize separate transport of passenger and cargo. Whether to use rail-and-wheel or maglev is yet to be decided, but construction will be kicked off as soon as the State gives the go-ahead, the railway official said.
Since the domestic maglev technology is still immature, if we use it we must import this costly technology, expert said. Statistics show that, according to the cost of 300 million yuan per kilometer, the whole project would cost 400 billion yuan. While the rail-and-wheel plan would only cost over 130 billion yuan, 100 million yuan per kilometer. Due to cost problem there is still no real maglev line operating in the world. As for the Shanghai maglev project under construction, the result is still to be seen.
