Chinese Shooters Eye 18 Golds at Asian Games
China shooters will strive for at least 18 gold medals at the upcoming 14th Asian Games, said Xu Haifeng, head coach of the Chinese national shooting team.
China shooters will strive for at least 18 gold medals at the upcoming 14th Asian Games, said Xu Haifeng, head coach of the Chinese national shooting team.
"If the shooters perform at their normal level, China could win about 20 golds at the Asiad," Xu said after a training session Wednesday.
"The minimum target we set for the Busan Games is to secure 18 golds and try our utmost to win one or two more."
China won 17 golds, 18 silvers and 11 bronzes at the World Shooting Championships in Finland two weeks ago, ranking second behind powerhouses Russia on the medals table.
Xu, however, warned that the shooters from other Aisan countries like Japan, South Korea and Kazakhstan, are also very competitive.
"It much depends on the performance of shooters in the competition." said Xu, who won China's first Olympic gold at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984.
"The home advantage of South Korea cannot be made light of either." he added.
The Asian Games will be held in Busan, South Korea, from September 29 to October 14. The Chinese shooters are gearing up for the Asiad at the Qingzhen training center in Guiyang, the provincial capital of China's southwest province of Guizhou.
