Software Industry Booms in NE China Port City

Dalian, a coastal city in northeast China's Liaoning Province, has witnessed rapid development of its software industry in the last two decades, the past three years in particular.

Dalian, a coastal city in northeast China's Liaoning Province, has witnessed rapid development of its software industry in the last two decades, the past three years in particular.

Statistics show that the sales volume of the city's software industry has grown by more than 50 percent on a yearly basis since 1999.

The number of software enterprises increased 47 percent between1999 and 2001, employing about 10,000 software programmers, according to Luan Qingwei, deputy director of the city's Information Industry Bureau.

The state-level Dalian Software Park has attracted more than 100 enterprises with over 2,000 software programmers.

The booming software industry in the city has attracted many famous multinational corporations such as Nokia, Ericsson, GE and Panasonic. Meanwhile, 40 local software enterprises have business contacts with Japan, the United States and Singapore.

The city's software exports rank third among Chinese cities following Shanghai and Beijing. Its software exports to Japan top other Chinese cities.

On the other hand, information technology enterprises from Japan and the Republic of Korea have launched schools in Dalian to foster and train software professionals.
