Two small planes conducting training exercises collided and burst into flames at a busy Australian Melbourne airport Monday, killing a pilot and injuring two others, police said.

There were conflicting reports as to whether the Cessna 172 planes collided in the air or on the runway.

The accident happened at Moorabbin Airport in Melbourne's southeast about 6:40 p.m., police superintendent Ian Winn said.

The pilot of one plane, its sole occupant, was killed instantly, Winn said.

The pilot and only passenger in the second plane suffered minor injuries and were hospitalized.

The airport was closed immediately and was not due to reopen until Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigators examined the scene Tuesday morning.
