China Urges India-Pakistan Talks on Border Tensions

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan Wednesday expressed the hope that India and Pakistan will start dialogue to ease tensions on the subcontinent.

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan Wednesday expressed the hope that India and Pakistan will start dialogue to ease tensions on the subcontinent.

Tang made the appeal when meeting his Indian counterpart, Yashwant Sinha, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF)which is underway in the capital of Brunei.

China, which has kept a close eye on the situation in South Asia, has no selfish interests in the India-Pakistan dispute, Tangsaid, adding that China's policy on the issue is to make peace andfacilitate talks.

"We note that Pakistan voiced objection to acts of terror in all forms and manifestations. The Pakistani government's stance onfighting terrorism is explicit and firm," he said.

"We hope that India and Pakistan will ease tensions and make peace between them through dialogue, which is in the interest of both countries and is also a desire of the international community," Tang said.

For his part, Sinha said India is willing to bring peace to South Asia through dialogue with Pakistan.

Tensions have been high in South Asia for months after a seriesof attacks by militants on Indian facilities, which India blamed on Pakistan. The two countries amassed some one million troops along the border between them in the disputed Kashmir.

At the meeting, the two ministers also discussed ties between their two countries.

Tang said it is China's set policy to develop China-India good neighborly ties and mutual beneficial cooperation.

Tang also expressed welcome to Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's visit to China this year, which he said would further promote the development of bilateral ties.
