Defense Chief Says US not Seeking Regime Change in Iran, DPRK
US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Tuesday that although the United States is seeking a regime change in Iraq, it is not pursuing the same policy towards Iran and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Tuesday that although the United States is seeking a regime change in Iraq, it is not pursuing the same policy towards Iran and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
"The policy of the government of the United States has been to (seek a )regime change for Iraq. That's the Congress and the executive branch both. It has not been that for some other countries," Rumsfeld said at a news briefing.
But the US defense secretary noted that "the other countries, that the president included, for example, in the Axis of Evil, have some similar characteristics."
Rumsfeld's remarks is of significance as the Bush administration is stepping up saber-rattling against Iraq. The administration has vowed to use "all tools" to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
In his state of the union address delivered at the end of January, US President George W. Bush listed Iraq, Iran and the DPRK as the Axis of Evil countries, accusing them of seeking weapons of mass destruction.
