Jordanian King Urges US to Move Quicker Towards Middle East Peace
Visiting Jordanian King Abdullah on Tuesday urged US President George W. Bush to speed up his three-year timetable for the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Visiting Jordanian King Abdullah on Tuesday urged US President George W. Bush to speed up his three-year timetable for the establishment of a Palestinian state.
"We need to expedite this target date so that the Israeli occupation can end sooner," the king said in a speech delivered inAspen, Colorado.
The ongoing reforms carried out by the Palestinians would mean little if Israel could halt normal life of the Palestinians through military incursions into the Palestinian-controlled areas, the king said.
Abdullah, who is expected to meet Bush in Washington on Thursday, said that the Arabs have little trust in the US using its influence to pressure Israel to give up the West Bank, Gaza and part of Jerusalem.
"This is all the more reason for the US to show its commitment to fairness and freedom and lead the way to peace," he noted.
Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, who is also traveling inthe United States, met the king for an hour in Aspen and briefing him the recent talks between Israelis and the Palestinians.
Peres, widely believed to be a moderate figure in the Sharon government, is also expected to meet Bush in Washington on Thursday.
