Preparations Underway for Israeli-Palestinian Meeting
A meeting between Israeli and Palestinian officials to continue talks on security, political and economical issues is under preparation, said Palestinian official sources.
A meeting between Israeli and Palestinian officials to continue talks on security, political and economical issues is under preparation, said Palestinian official sources.
However, the sources said no date has yet been set for such a meeting.
The meetings between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators were suspended following Israel's Monday night airstrike on a civilian building in Gaze city, in which leader of the Hamas armed wing Salah Shehada was killed, along with the deaths of 14 civilians, including nine children.
Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Information Minister YasserAbed Rabbo told reporters that there are talks among Palestinian officials on resuming the Israeli-Palestinian meetings.
"We don't see any Israeli positive attitude towards finding a solution to the crisis as the Israelis continue assassination, occupation of cities and demolition of houses," said Abed Rabbo. "Israel is maneuvering after the Gaza airstrike," he added.
Well-informed Palestinian sources close to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat said a meeting of the Palestinian leadership would beheld later on Saturday to discuss the urgent issues to be discussedwith the Israeli side.
The sources said there are arguments among different Palestinianleaders on whether or not to resume the meetings with the Israelis, especially after the airstrike that targeted civilians in Gaza City.
Palestinian reports said before the Israeli airstrike on Gaza, the Palestinian side presented a security plan to their Israeli counterparts, proposing an Israeli pullback to the positions beforethe outbreak of the intifada (uprising) in September 2000.
The reports added that the Palestinian plan also proposed a redeployment of Palestinian police and security forces in the townsand cities the Israeli army pulls out of, and a collection of weapons from militants in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.
Palestinian sources said PNA Interior Minister Abdel Razaq Al Yehya presented the plan to the Israeli side, in a bid to reduce violence between the two sides to pave the way for an Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian towns and villages.
