A senior Chinese mainland official in charge of cross-Strait affairs has called for direct trade, transport and mail services with Taiwan Province as soon as possible.

Tang Shubei, director of the Beijing-based Center for the Studyof Cross-Strait Relations, made the call Thursday while addressing a symposium on the mechanism of economic cooperation between the two sides.

Reiterating the Mainland's stand on the cross-Strait ties, Tangpointed out that the political differences between the two sides should not hamper economic cooperation across the Strait nor harm the interests of people living on either side.

Cross-Strait relations were seeing an historic opportunity as both sides had joined the World Trade Organization and were opening wider to each other economically, he said.

There were no technical problems blocking direct links between the two sides, Tang said, citing the recent renewal of an agreement on flights between Hong Kong and Taiwan as a good example.
