The Toronto Raptors' Vince Carter said Wednesday Yao Ming would be successful in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Carter, the two-time All-Star poll winner, played a 2-on-2 half-court game against Yao Ming, with two tiny kids during a Nike Asian trip at the stadium of the Chinese National Training Administration.
"He's gonna to be successful because he is high, and he has skills," said Carter in the afternoon interview with Chinese media.
Yao, 2.25 meters high, was selected as No.1 by the Houston Rockets in June's draft, and is waiting for the final permission of his club Shanghai Sharks and the Chinese Basketball Administration.
"If you give me 3-4 weeks to see how he plays, and how he adjusts, I can tell you he is good or not," Carter said. "There are a lot of people from the world playing in NBA, and lots of people struggled at first."
"Yao's gonna to find good time and bad time in NBA. He needs to keep his head above the water when he wants to do well," he added.
Carter recalled his feelings when he first met Yao at an international match in Japan. "I said to myself (when I first saw him). He's tall. I'm going to dunk over him," Carter joked.
"But now I don't want to."
Carter said Yao Ming is not strong enough for NBA match.
"He deserves what he gets ... the only thing I think for him is to get stronger. There are lots of guys in NBA strong enough to beat him."
Carter will fly to Hong Kong on Wednesday morning and travel toChinese Taipei to call the Asian trip.
