China is in dire need of Glocal (global and local) Men following its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), a specialist on communication from the State University of New York said Wednesday.
Glocal Men are those who are well-informed in both foreign and local cultures, familiar with international business rules and skillful in intercultural communication, he said at the Beijing Panel of the International Communication Association (ICA) 2002 held at the People's University of China.
Since China's entry into the WTO, it has faced with a variety of external challenges. More Chinese people have experienced cultural impact from outside.
Experts at the panel agreed that Chinese business people, especially those working in multinational corporations, must follow international practice and minimize cultural clash. In thissense, more people who are good at intercultural communication have to be trained.
"Glocal Men training has become more important to China's development since it became a member of WTO," said Zhang Longdong,a professor with the School of Journalism and Communication of thePeople's University.
At the panel entitled "the Future of Communication in China since Entry into the WTO", specialists made discussions on inter-cultural communication, international copyright law, telecommunication reform and the opportunity of investing in Chinese media.
ICA was formed in 1950, bringing together professionals interested in human communication. It has over 3,400 individual members around the world from colleges, universities, governments, media, and business and legal circles.
