Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa on Tuesday condemned Israeli air strikes on a neighborhood in Gaza City overnight.
"The attacks represent a real challenge to recent Quartet's discussions aimed at restoring a political track in the region as well as Arab efforts to realize peace," Moussa told reporters.
He also called on the United Nations Security Council to providean international protection for the Palestinians who are under an Israeli occupation.
Last week, US Secretary of State Colin Powell, European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and UN chief Kofi Annan met in New York to seek a way out ofthe current Mideast crisis.
At least 12 people were killed and 150 others injured in the Israeli air strikes which targeted Salah Shehada, commander of the armed wing Ezzedin Al-Qassam Brigades of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). Among the dead were also Shehada's wife and theirthree children.
Shehada was on Israel's most wanted list and accused by Israel of being responsible for "hundreds" of anti-Israeli attacks.
Earlier in the day, the Palestinian National Authority appealed to the United Nations Security Council to hold an urgent meeting tocondemn the Israeli air strikes in Gaza City.
