About 100 presidents from renowned universities at home and abroad attended a forum in Beijing Monday to discuss how to upgrade the level of management in Chinese universities.

The 11-day event, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, also aims to help presidents at Chinese universities broaden their views and learn from their foreign counterparts' advanced experience in management.

Heads of some world renowned universities, including Harvard, Oxford and Stanford universities, will speak to the forum on the management of modern universities.

Higher education is mainly run by the government in China. In order to bring more international influence to its top universities such as Beijing University and Qinghua University, the country's educational authorities have made great efforts, such as increasing investment to improve teaching and research conditions, and improving the quality of management.

A first-class university should not only provide the most advanced hardware, but also enable its students to become capable of independent thought and self-study even after leaving the campus, said Neil Rudenstine, president emeritus of Harvard University.
