Internet Users in China Reach 45.8 Million: CNNIC Report
By the end of June, 2002, the number of Internet users in China have reached 45.8 million, an increase of 19.3 million or 72.8. percent over the same period in 2001, according to a report released by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

The figure has put China the third largest Internet user in the world, after the United States and Japan.
Since 1997, CNNIC has conducted surveys on China's Internet development and released reports twice a year. This is its tenth report.
The report says China has 16.13 million computers linked to the Internet, an increase of 61.0 percent over June 2001. The number of websites in China reaches 293,213, a 20.8 percent increase during the same period.
The report shows that the proportion of female surfers continues to increase and now makes up 39.1 percent. The percentage of Internet users without college education is now 68.3 percent of the total, indicating that the Internet is now coming closer to common people.
In a week, an average Internet user spends 8.3 hours on the Internet, receives 6.5 E-mails (not including Spam) and sends 5.3 pieces, according to the report.
CNNIC was founded on Jun. 3rd 1997. It is a nonprofit-making organization of administration and service, performing duties of National Internet Network Information Center.
