Chinese, Russians Swim Border River to Mark Treaty Anniversary
One hundred and forty-one Chinese and Russians, mostly young people, swam across a border river last Wednesday, to celebrate the first anniversary ofthe signing of the Sino-Russian Good-Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation.
One hundred and forty-one Chinese and Russians, mostly young people, swam across a border river last Wednesday, to celebrate the first anniversary ofthe signing of the Sino-Russian Good-Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation.
In the morning, 66 Russians and 75 Chinese swam across the Heilongjiang River from both banks to reach each other's country. They were greeted by crowds including dignitaries and ordinary people.
All the young swimmers were volunteers. They comprised workers,businessmen, farmers, students, soldiers and government officials.
The cross-river swim was initiated by local governments and approved by the central governments of both countries.
