Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao has urged southwest China's Yunnan Province to make the most of China's strategy to speed up western development by accelerating key infrastructure construction.
During an inspection tour of Yunnan which ended here Saturday, Hu, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), visited local businesses, high-tech development zones, ethnic people's homes and army units. Provincial party and government leaders accompanied him.
In a special tour of a poor village inhabited by minority ethnic groups, Hu asked about the living conditions of villagers and urged local officials to strive to raise farmers' incomes while easing their economic burden. He advised they build more small, fast-completed infrastructure projects that yield quick economic results and bring handsome benefits to farmers.
Protecting the environment should also be a priority during economic development, Hu told local officials.
