Life expectancy has risen slightly in central China's Henan Province, the country's most populous area.
According to provincial census results released in Zhengzhou recently, life expectancy in Henan by 2000 stood at 72.8 years on average, a gain of 2.8 years compared with the 1990 figure.
Life expectancy for women was 74.7 years, 3.7 years more than for men.
The number of centenarians in the province by 2000 had climbed to 1,130, doubling the 1990 figure. Some 868 centenarians lived inrural areas.
A Chinese expert attributed the longer life expectancy in Henanto improved medical conditions and higher living standards.
Currently, people aged 65 or above make up 7.1 percent of Henan's total population.
By around 2040 the province would have the highest number of elderly people in China with one out of every four to five people aged 60 or above, a government official predicted.
