Jiangsu Province Reports Double-digit Midyear Growth
Prosperous Jiangsu province, in east China, recorded a better-than-expected economic performance during the first half of this year, official figures revealed Thursday.

Figures released by the province's Statistics Bureau show the gross domestic product (GDP) for the period reached 477.3 billion yuan (58 billion US dollars), up 11.2 percent over the same periodof last year.
The growth rate is 3.4 percentage points higher than the national average. The population of the province totaled 74 million in 2000.
Overall industrial output grew by 14.8 percent to 168.63 billion yuan (20.5 billion dollars), while its total summer grain and rapeseed output dropped by 7.7 percent and 10.9 percent respectively, due to national disasters.
Investment in fixed assets totaled 166.7 billion yuan (20 billion dollars) during the six months, or 25.6 percent over the same period of last year.
The province also reported a 20.5 percent growth in imports andexports to 29.5 billion US dollars, with overall exports up by 20 percent to 16.5 billion US dollars.
The per capita disposable income and expenditure for urban residents in the first half rose to 4,308 yuan (525 dollars) and 2,894 yuan (352 dollars), or increases of 12.1 percent and 8.1 percent respectively.
The per capita income for farmers rose by 7.2 percent to 2,020 yuan (246 dollars) while their expenditure was up 8.5 percent to 1,070 yuan (130 dollars).
