Kim Jong Il, leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is ready for renewed dialogue with South Korea, a senior Russian official said Wednesday in Moscow.
"Pyongyang is an active partner today searching for ways out ofthe crisis and wants to establish good neighborly relations," saidKonstantin Pulikovsky, Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy to the Far East.
Pulikovsky made the remark at a news briefing in Russia's Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk, where he was welcoming the arrival of a 250-member South Korean delegation that is promoting Russian-South Korean friendship.
The delegation began its journey by train from the eastern portof Vladivostok and will travel more than 6,400 kilometers across Russia's vast expanse to Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The envoy also praised South Korean President Kim Dae-jung's position toward warmer relations with the DPRK, saying that the calm and stable atmosphere in the Korean Peninsula fully meets Russia's interests and is especially important for Russia's Far East region.
Russia has recently intensified its diplomatic efforts between the two Koreas, especially after a deadly skirmish between their warships in late June, which caused new tensions between them.
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday that its minister Igor Ivanov is to visit both Seoul and Pyongyang later this month for talks on the Korean Peninsula.
