Malaysia Promotes Cooperation Between ASEAN, China: Mahathir

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Wednesday his country will make efforts to promote cooperation between ASEAN members and China.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Wednesday his country will make efforts to promote cooperation between ASEAN members and China.

Malaysia supports regional cooperation within the frameworks of"ASEAN plus China" and "ASEAN plus China, Japan and Korea," hopingto bring in cooperative mechanism in the region like European Union and North American Free Trade Area, Mahathir said when receiving Jiang Chunyun, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, who is here on a five-day visit.

The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines,Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

On bilateral ties, Mahathir said that Malaysia would continue to strengthen the friendly cooperation with China and that he was glad to see the existing close cooperation of mutual benefit between the two countries.

China's economic reforms and the opening-up to outside world policy have been very successful, and have brought in increased economic welfare and prosperity to the Chinese people, he observed.

On his part, Jiang said many fruitful meetings of top leaders of the two countries have laid a solid foundation for the development of bilateral relations. Now the two countries are expanding friendship and cooperation in various fields in a bid toachieve more good results, he added.

Malaysia is the first leg of Jiang's two nation tour. The vice chairman and his party are expected to leave here for Vietnam Saturday to continue their friendly visit.
