Iraqi President Saddam Hussein struck a defiant note on Wednesday and said that the United States will not be able to defeat Iraq.

Saddam made the remarks in his annual address on the 34th anniversary of the July 17-30 revolution which brought the Arab Baath Socialist Party to power in Iraq in 1968.

In a strong message to "all evil tyrants and oppressors of the world," Saddam said "You will never defeat me this time, never evenif you come together from all over the world and invite all the devils as well to stand by you, support or incite you."

Saddam was apparently referring to the United States and its allies who have been determined to overthrow him.

Saddam called on the Iraqis to support him and his leadership toconfront the US threats to topple him.

"My brothers, you are the wound of my soul whenever you are wounded or hurt by a foreign power or its lackeys. You are the mostprecious to me and able to confront injustice and aggression, refusing to allow the arrows of the tyrant and his stooges to touchyour spirit, your determination, and your conviction, your stand, your will and your loyalty," Saddam was quoted by the official Iraqi News Agency.

Saddam also voiced strong support for the Palestinian jihad (holy war) against Israeli occupation.

Saddam's defiant speech came amid repeated threats by US President George W. Bush.

"We'll use all tools at our disposal to do so (topple Saddam)," Bush said at a press conference on July 8 in the White House, reiterating US policy which has been aimed at ending Saddam's rule in Iraq.

Bush has branded Iraq as part of an "axis of evil" and strongly warned that Iraq may become the next target of the US-led war on terrorism.

Saddam and his top aides have remained adamant and vowed to thwart any US schemes against the country.
