Russia Stresses Political Settlement of Iraq Issue

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday stressed that the Iraq issue should be settled through political and diplomatic ways, the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday stressed that the Iraq issue should be settled through political and diplomatic ways, the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

The Russian president made the statement in a telegram of congratulations to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on the 34th anniversary of the July 17-30 revolution, which brought the ruling Arab Baath Socialist Party to power in Iraq.

"Russia is willing to continue its active work to reach a comprehensive settlement of the Iraq issue through political and diplomatic ways only," Putin said.

Russia has repeatedly voiced opposition to any US military strikes against Iraq.

"Russia will oppose any unilateral military action against Iraq without the approval of the United Nations Security Council," Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov also said on Tuesday.

US President George W. Bush has vowed to topple President Saddamwith all possible tools at his disposal.
