The people of New York City will never forget the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks, city Mayor Mike Bloomberg said at a brief ceremony on Monday marking the end of the debris examination of the World Trade Center (WTC).
A sanitation site at Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of the city, has sifted through 1.62 million tons of rubble taken from the fallen towers of the WTC since September 12 last year.
The excavation of the ruins in lower Manhattan where the twin towers had stood for 28 years as the metropolitan landmark ended last month and the last truckload of debris arrived at the landfill in Staten Island on June 28.
Over 4,000 body parts have been found during the 10-month sifting operation, in addition to 16,000 body parts recovered right at the WTC site. The remains will go on for many more months to be examined. So far only remains of 1,207 of the 2,823 believed to have died have been identified, according to a medical examiner.
