Israeli, Palestinian Officials to Hold 'Wide Meeting'
An aide to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat revealed Monday that high-ranking Israeli and Palestinian officials are to hold "a wide meeting" either on Tuesday or Wednesday.
An aide to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat revealed Monday that high-ranking Israeli and Palestinian officials are to hold "a wide meeting" either on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh told reporters in Ramallah that the Israel-Palestinian meeting would be a follow-up to last week's talks between Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and three PalestinianNational Authority (PNA) ministers.
"Several political, security and economical issues would be on the agenda of the meeting to be discussed by the two sides," said Abu Rudeineh, adding that the PNA was notified by the Israeli government on the meeting.
PNA Local Government Minister Saeb Erekat will be again chief negotiator accompanied by Finance Minister Sallam Fayadd, Interior Minister Abdel Razzaq Al Yahya and two other cabinet ministers.
Peres will head the Israeli delegation comprising Israeli cabinet members, security officials and economy experts, according to the Palestinian official.
The meeting was originally scheduled for last week only to be delayed after Israel decided that more preparations were needed.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has been pursuing the exclusion of Arafat from any contacts between the two sides, but allows Peres to meet Palestinian officials who Israel believes are not involved in either corruption or military attacks against the Jewish state.
The U.S. administration is also pressing for a new Palestinian leadership, marking a gambit by Sharon to sideline Arafat in the future settlement of the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
