Taiwan Urged to Better Accommodation for Mainland Fishermen
Taiwan should improve the living conditions of mainland fishermen working for the island province'sshipping companies, urged an official from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.
Diao Chunhe, chairman of the Cross-Straits Coordination Council for the Employment of Fishermen, under the ministry, said at a press briefing Monday, his council's request to send a delegation to visit fishermen injured when a boat caught fire was rejected by Taiwan authorities.
The fire broke out on a Taiwanese boat, a floating hostel, with 133 mainland fishermen aboard, on July 9. All were rescued except one who is still missing.
In the wake of the accident, the mainland-based council has contacted the Taiwan department concerned to ask to visit the injured fishermen and to deal with any remaining problems.
"We are seriously concerned about the health and security of these fishermen," he said.
Diao hopes better living conditions will be provided for fishermen to replace temporary shelter in boats and to prevent such accidents from happening again.
"Action should be taken to protect the legal interests of mainland fishermen," he added.
One Missing, 132 Fishermen Rescued from Burning Boat
Local rescue teams in Taiwan were rushing Tuesday to find the last of 133 mainland fisherman stranded on a burning vessel off southern Taiwan as a tropical storm gathered pace.
Helicopters had managed to airlift 132 fishermen to safety after the Taiwan-registered "Yuanshen 2" caught fire, an official said.
