Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said in an interview published Monday in Kuwait City that he is opposed to the anticipated US strike on Iraq to topple the regime under Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
"The region cannot bear the burden of more crises and we do not want more tension when our main concern is the well-being of the Iraqi people," Mubarak said in an exclusive interview with Kuwait'sEnglish daily Arab Times.
"It will be a catastrophe and it will create a really difficult situation," the Egyptian president stressed.
Mubarak also denied reports that he had reached an agreement with US President George W. Bush to oust Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, dismissing those reports as lies propagated by Israel.
"Removing Arafat from power would be a big mistake because he isa man of vast experience in the Middle East conflict and this will be a plus in future negotiations," he added.
Last week, President Bush renewed a pledge to use "all tools" athis disposal to oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, whom Washington accuses of developing weapons of mass destruction, sparking speculations that the United States will launch military actions against Iraq.
Arab states, including Iraq's arch-foe Kuwait, have expressed their opposition to any military actions against Iraq.
Kuwait's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Al-Sabah said last Friday the kingdom will not serve as a launchpadfor future US attacks on its former occupier Iraq.
