Appointment of Acting PM Invalid: South Korean Opposition
The South Korea's biggest rival party Grand National Party (GNP) Monday called for an immediate suspension of the office of the acting prime minister, claiming the appointment of Chang Sang to the post prior to the parliamentary approval is invalid.
The South Korea's biggest rival party Grand National Party (GNP) Monday called for an immediate suspension of the office of the acting prime minister, claiming the appointment of Chang Sang to the post prior to the parliamentary approval is invalid.
"Before her appointment is approved by the National Assembly, the prime minister designated is only a nominee, not a prime minister or an acting prime minister," GNP spokesman Nam Kyong-phil was quoted by the national news agency Yonhap News as saying.
"The customary practice of letting a nominee exert his or her authority as an acting prime minister is against the Constitution," the spokesman said.
Unlike the Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) and the United Liberal Democrats (ULD), the GNP has decided to deny Chang's requirement of a meeting with the party hierarchy on Monday.
South Korea experienced a cabinet reshuffle last Thursday, which has given rise to a controversy about Prime Minister nominee Chang sang, especially on her son's nationality issue, in the GNP and some media in Seoul.
