Iran on Saturday accused the United States of interfering in its domestic affairs following US President George W. Bush's criticism on the Iranian government.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said Washington is using old tactics to sow the seed of discord in the Iranian society.
The White House opportunist policies show that US officials havenot a proper and exact understanding of the ideal of Iran's IslamicRevolution, he said.
On Friday, Bush said that in the last two Iranian presidential and parliamentary elections, the vast majority of the Iranian people voted for political and economic reforms, but the government's "uncompromising, destructive policies" led to "far toolittle" changes in the daily lives of the Iranian people.
Bush said that when Iranian people move towards freedom and tolerance, the United States would be a close ally of Iran.
Meanwhile, Asefi rejected as "unfounded" the statements by Bush's representative for Afghan affairs Zalmay Khalilzad on Iran.
Khalilzad has accused Iran of being the main factor behind the tensions in Afghanistan, a charge denied by Tehran.
