China Puts Flood Toll at 793 People

The recent flooding across China has claimed 793 lives and caused direct economic losses of more than 30 billion yuan (3.61 billion U.S. dollars), according to information released by China's Civil Affairs Ministry on Friday.

The recent flooding across China has claimed 793 lives and caused direct economic losses of more than 30 billion yuan (3.61 billion U.S. dollars), according to information released by China's Civil Affairs Ministry on Friday.

The floods affected 24 province-level administrative zones and a population of more than 100 million by July 8, according to the ministry. It was the worst flooding in China since the early 1990sin both area and population affected.

The floods destroyed more than eight million hectares of crops and forced 1.78 million people to flee their homes. Schools, medical facilities, transport, communications, water storage and power supplies were badly damaged in the flooded areas.

Shaanxi, Fujian, Hunan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, Hubei, Jiangxi and Guizhou provinces and municipalities suffered the biggest losses.
