Some 30,000 Panamanians are infected with the HIV-virus, meaning one percent of the total population of the Central American country is affected by the disease, said Health Minister Fernando Gracia as the internationalconference on AIDS closed in Barcelona, Spain on Friday.

Gracia termed as "alarming" the HIV/AIDS situation in Panama, as the number of individuals diagnosed with the killer disease in the country is much higher than the rest of the Central America.

Gracia said that each week an average of seven Panamanians get infected with the HIV-virus, and that every patient costs the state 20,000 to 25,000 U.S. dollars a year.

Currently, 1,500 people are receiving medical treatment of the disease, and have to be hospitalized several times a year, with each hospitalized patient costing the State health system some 5,000 dollars, the official said.

Gracia called on Panamanians to heed recommendations on AIDS toprotect themselves from the disease.
