China Limits Flight of Airliners without Anti-collision System

Airliners without anti-collision warning systems were not allowed as of Friday to fly above 8,400 meters or take off and touch town in the country's nine busiest airports.

Airliners without anti-collision warning systems were not allowed as of Friday to fly above 8,400 meters or take off and touch town in the country's nine busiest airports.

According to the Shanghai Civil Aviation department, the ban is to be implemented every day between 8:00 am and 9:00 pm (Beijing time) in major airports including Beijing International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, Shanghai Pudong Airport, Nanjing Lukou Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

The airborne collision avoidance system costing 200,000 US dollars will send out warning signals automatically and give reminders to pilots to conduct space adjustments once another aircraft is detected flying nearby and posing a danger.

Statistics from the Civil Aviation Administration of China said that most domestic airline fleets have the collision avoidance system, including the 94 passenger jets of both the China Eastern Airlines and the Shanghai Airlines.

These aircraft include the A319 and A320 Airbus, the MD-11 and the Boeing 737.

China had promised in December 2001 that domestic commercial jets must be installed with the system before 2004 to strengthen air safety.
