As a result, 1,936 people involved in the cases were arrested, 404 of whom were sentenced, said Zhou Ruizeng, an official with the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration.
Meanwhile, 230,000 cases of fake cigarettes (one case contains 10,000 cigarettes), 624 sets of equipment and 6,238 tons of tobacco leaf were seized, and 1,197 illegal production sites were destroyed.
Zhou's administration, with the Ministry of Public Security, waged the battle in nine provinces and autonomous regions where the illegal practice was most rampant.
