IOC senior member He Zhenliang gave his thumbs-up on Friday to the Beijing organizing committee for the progress they made at the initial stage of the preparations for the 2008 Olympics.

"No other Olympic games I experienced had such smooth progress as what Beijing has done just one year after the city was chosen to host the Games," said He, an IOC executive member.

He made the remarks at a meeting in honor of the first anniversary of the successful bid for the 2008 Olympics. Beijing was awarded the top sporting event in July 13 last year at Moscow.

Since then, Beijing has left no time lost in their preparations for the Olympics, inviting tenders for the overall planning of two major Olympic venues and initiating the "Olympic Look" projectby inviting bids for Olympic logo. A joint marketing agreement between the IOC and the organizing committee is to be reached latethis year.

"During the past year, the organizing committee has made sound progress, winning accolade from the International Olympic Committee as well as the world community," he added.

"The IOC staff has been impressed by what the organizers have done, thinking that they are quick to learn what they were originally unfamiliar with," said He.

"They even jokingly said that Beijing would be ready by the year of 2004 instead of 2008."

He attributed Beijing's flying start at the initial stage to the "virtues of the Chinese people", who he said value the keepingof words.

"Since China has made pledges, they would try all their best toaccomplish them. That is not only the traditional way the Chinese behave, but also one of their virtues," said He.

"With great support from the Central Government of China, Beijing organizing committee did have taken great efforts to prepare for the Games," he added.
