The Lebanese resistance guerrilla group Hezbollah, or party of God, denied on Thursday that it had rejected a German-mediated deal to swap prisoners with Israel.

Hezbollah's Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah said in a statement he has not heard of any information about the refusal of the swap.

A local newspaper reported on Thursday that Hezbollah refused toswap retired Israeli army colonel Elhanan Tennenbaum for about 100 Arab prisoners held in Israeli jails.

The prisoners include 17 Hezbollah members and Marwan Barghouti, the West Bank commander of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatahmovement.

Tennenbaum, a businessman and reserve colonel, according to Israel, was kidnapped by Hezbollah in Beirut in October 2000. Hezbollah said he was an agent of Israel's Mossad secret service.

Besides Tennenbaum, Hezbollah holds three other Israeli soldiers, who were seized in the disputed Shebaa Farms area along the Syrian-Lebanese border in October 2000.

However, Israel has expressed doubt that these soldiers survivedthe serious wounds they sustained before being kidnapped by Hezbollah.

Tennenbaum is alive, but needs medical treatment, according to German sources.

Israel asked Germany to mediate between the two sides to achievea swap.
