China will work with Nepal along lines mapped out by the leaders of both countries, for ongoing friendship from generation to generation, says China's Vice President Hu Jintao.
Hu made the remarks in Beijing on Thursday at a meeting with visiting Nepalese King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev.
He pointed to Sino-Nepalese good neighborliness dating back over 1,500 years and voiced his pleasure at the strength of bilateral friendship which had withstood the test of changes on both the domestic and international fronts.
He mentioned Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to Nepal in 1996 during which leaders of the two countries agreed to set up a good neighborly partnership lasting from generation to generation. The important consensus reached between the two heads of state on Wednesday on friendship and cooperation in the new century, had laid a firmer foundation for long-term, sound progress in bilateral relations, he said.
Hu expressed his appreciation for Nepalese government support and cooperation with China in the past on the Tibet issue.
He pointed out that the strengthening friendship and cooperation between the Tibet Autonomous Region and Nepal was in the common interests of the two peoples. He had great hopes for its potential.
Referring to the agreements signed on Wednesday between the two sides, he said he believed they would facilitate cooperation between Tibet and Nepal.
Expressing satisfaction with his visit, Gyanendra said bilateral ties were based on reliability, trust and understanding, and Nepal appreciated China's support and assistance in the past.
Nepal would strengthen cooperation with China, Tibet in particular, in various fields and in non-governmental exchanges, said Gyanendra. He hoped that this visit would further promote bilateral relations.
