Britain Freezes Assets of Zimbabwe's Ruling Party
Britain said on Wednesday that it has frozen 76,000 pounds (about 117,511 US dollars) in assets belonging to Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's ruling party.
Britain said on Wednesday that it has frozen 76,000 pounds (about 117,511 US dollars) in assets belonging to Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's ruling party.
The assets were seized under sanctions imposed by the European Union against Mugabe and his government after allegedly unfair elections in Zimbabwe in March.
Britain's junior foreign office minister, Denis McShane, said that by freezing those assets, the financial markets of the European Union and Switzerland had been put "off limits" to the Mugabe and his party.
The move also helps signal the "increasing isolation" of Mugabe's ruling party elite in the African nation, McShane told the House of Commons in a written reply to a question asked by a parliament member from the opposition Conservative Party.
Britain has repeatedly criticized the Zimbabwe government in recent years on its land reform policies and the last election.
